Polyester adhesives are pressure-sensitive hot melt adhesives that bond to a variety of materials. They have excellent chemical resistance, however they are vulnerable to degradation with heat and moisture over time. These adhesives contain saturated and unsaturated polyester resins, reactive diluents such as acetone or a mixture of acetone and alcohol, hardening initiators such as organic peroxides and hydroperoxides, extenders like silica and polymers that copolymerize with the unsaturated polyester, and hardening catalysts like tertiary amines and cobalt salts.
Polyester Adhesives are used in furniture and construction industries due to their high adhesion strength, resistance against water, gasoline and chemical solutions. They are also easy to use and can be disposed of after application. They are also less invasive than mechanical fasteners and leave no external projections or gaps. These adhesives are synthetic and based on unsaturated or saturated polyesters. The components required for this type of glue are solvents, hardening initiators and hardening catalysts. Extenders like silica or cement are added to decrease the viscosity. Polyester adhesive without extenders are slightly colored or colorless liquid compositions able to work for several minutes or hours. Polyester adhesive have a wide range of applications in the automotive industry, particularly for bonding a variety of fabrics and materials such as polyester, PVC, polycarbonate, aluminum and wood. They are a high-performance adhesive that can withstand elevated temperatures and provide superior resistance to plasticizer migration and water. Unsaturated polyester adhesives cure by an exothermic reaction between a dibasic acid or anhydride and a diol such as maleic anhydride or 1,2-ethanediol. The curing conditions are determined by the ratio and type of monomers used in the polyester formulation. Automotive finishes need to be attractive and durable while providing design freedom. Structural and hot melt adhesives from polyesters and urethanes are designed to meet these requirements. They include pressure sensitive, reclosable and spray adhesives. The chemistries and open times for these adhesives vary, as do the load bearing capabilities. They can also be formulated to be low-odor or non-flammable. The amount of textile-based material in an automobile is significant, including knitted, woven and nonwoven fabrics used as facing materials; needle punch and stitch bond fabrics for airbags and seat belts; spunbond or meltblown nonwoven structures for sound insulation; and resin-impregnated composites for engine comportment items and hoses. Polyester is used in various types of clothing fabrics to impart a range of desired properties. This is particularly true in outdoor wear where it helps to provide crease resistance. It is also employed in combination with natural fibres such as cotton to produce fabric that possesses blended characteristics. Polyester adhesive are also used in the manufacture of safety belts for vehicles. This type of fabric offers a high degree of tensile strength, which is essential for ensuring the safety of car passengers in the event of an accident. Polyester is typically used in conjunction with other textiles, such as elastane and leather. It can be produced in either filament, staple or tow forms and is also available as fiberfill – the voluminous form that is used in pillows and quilts. Polyester adhesives are often used for bonding, masking and insulation applications in the electronics industry. They are typically used to hold bagged materials and components during assembly operations, as well as for high-temperature masking and protection purposes. They also provide excellent resistance to oil, solvents, plasticizers and water. Using polyester adhesive can also increase productivity, as they cure rapidly, making them ideal for high-speed assembly lines. Unlike traditional stitching, they offer quick and accurate positioning of components. Moreover, they reduce the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which have a negative impact on the environment.VOCs are a chief concern for regulatory bodies and have a direct impact on the profitability of many industries.
