They are a good alternative to pressure relief valves as they are cheaper to install and can be made from a wide range of materials. When the cylinder contents reach the predetermined rupture pressure, the disk bursts, and releases the contents. Depending on the material and design of the disk, the burst pressure may be significantly lower or higher than the pressure of the cylinder. The most important use of Pressure Relief Devices is in combination with pressure safety valves to protect them from corrosive, adhesive, polymerizing or viscous process media that can deteriorate or damage them. They can also be used to isolate pressure safety valves from corrosive process media when installed upstream of them. Pressure sensors are a vital component of industrial systems.
