A valve regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery, also referred to as a sealed lead-acid (SLA) battery, is a type of lead-acid battery that is distinguished by a limited amount of electrolyte (also known as "starved" electrolyte) absorbed in a plate separator or formed into a gel; balancing the negative and positive plates so that oxygen recombination is facilitated within the cell; and the presence of a gel cell and absorbent glass mat (AGM) batteries are the two main varieties of Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) Batteries (gel battery). Gel cells create a thick, putty-like gel by adding silica dust to the electrolyte. Between the battery plates of AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries is a fiberglass mesh that serves to hold the electrolyte and separate a plate. In comparison to either flooded vented lead-acid (VLA) batteries or the other, both kinds of VRLA batteries have benefits and drawbacks.
